Located on Wimbledon High Street, The Lawn Bistro is owned by restaurateur Akbar Ashurov and chef Ollie Couillaud, formerly of La Trompette. The clients brief was for designLSM to create an elegant, spacious and friendly dining environment. The site, formerly Lydon’s restaurant was dark with a heavy colour scheme. With the emphasis on opening up the interior – a large bar area towards the front of the restaurant was created.
A palette of warm grey with an accent colour of orange in the seat buttons, bar stool seat pads, feature chairs and on the stair runner has been applied. Commissioned artwork and blocks of Cole & Son wallpaper provide additional focus across the dining room, which seats 65 covers.

The basement, which was formerly redundant, now boasts an impressive wine display and tasting area featuring brightly coloured armchairs. The grey shop frontage reflects the clean, warm interior and introduction of canopies creates a high street presence.

In December 2010, Brighton based DesignLSM were commissioned to create an interior indicative of a traditional American bar-diner for the launch of The Red Dog Saloon in Hoxton Square. The space, which includes a ground floor restaurant accommodating 80 and basement bar for 100 will officially launch at the end of this month.
The client’s brief was to recreate the look and feel of a conventional Mid-Western saloon with the emphasis on tasty BBQ, which will be cooked on a genuine ‘smoke pit’. Tim Burford, Design Director took his inspiration from looking at Colorado diners, bars and the natural landscape.
The biggest challenge was not to over theme the interior, and instead subtly incorporate items strongly associated with the great Mid-West such as cow horns, moose-heads and natural timbers. The seating is a combination of booths and bar stools. Reclaimed materials such as pine, oak and brick predominate both levels. A large hardwood bar is located on the ground floor and a simple polished concrete bar in the basement.
The Red Dog Saloon opened in June 2011.

Fred Sirieix is the General Manager at Galvin at Windows, the Michelin-starred restaurant on the 28th floor of the London Hilton, Park Lane. He recently starred in Michel Roux’s Service on BBC2 as the mentor to the cast and has created The Art of Service board game.
The Art of Service is a training tool for restaurant and hotel owners, F&B directors and hospitality lecturers. It embodies the very essence of what hospitality and service are about and shows how to achieve quality and excellence in your organisation. It’s a fun, creative, participative and powerful training tool that covers all there is to know about the business. Suitable for staff at all levels it will help you to deliver the highest standards, consistently and continuously. But feel free to modify and adapt the game to suit your business. It is recommended that you do. The Art of Service is universal, but you also want to do it ‘your’ way.
“As designers, we create the client’s vision. However, without a consistent delivery across the whole operation, it’s a flawed concept. Fred’s The Art of Service is the tool to make this happen. Huge congratulations congrats to Fred on the launch of his board game. We first met him whilst working on Galvin at Windows and our more recent work on Galvin la Chapelle”.

Center Parcs are family holiday destinations, so creating a balanced environment for both adults and children is paramount. When Senior Designer Sally Williams was asked to inject a fresh look for Whinfell Forest in Cumbria she wanted to incorporate grown-up elements without being too sophisticated.
Muted taupe, fresh creams and blue greys will form a backdrop and help create a warm, calm atmosphere with splashes of red, orange, plum and acid green providing a vibrant twist. These accent colours will continue to be used in the lighting, cushions and dotted around the furniture. Seat pads for tub chairs and banquette seating will be re-upholstered in vinyl and seat backs in the more luxurious velour. The key feature is the Lakeside Inn building, which is a huge space with an open ceiling and exposed timber rafters. The biggest challenge was how to take advantage of the dramatic architectural features without overwhelming guests by its magnitude. The refit will include large ball pendants, which will be strategically positioned to break up these spacious areas.
Initial design ideas were presented to the client and having previously worked on The Foresters the brief became clear. Inspiration has been taken from the surrounding forest; trees, dappled light, autumnal tones – the approach was to interject these subtly and not be too literal. Sally comments: “I’m most excited about seeing the transformation because it had become tired and dated. I’m convinced that it is going to provide a really lovely family environment which compliments the beautiful location”.
The project completed in seven weeks, as planned. The client is so pleased with the results, Sally has been asked to start work on the Pancake House concept.

DesignLSM have worked on so many fantastic projects over the past two decades, we thought it only fair to share some of our designs, experiences and images with you. Our most recently completed project was retail – tell us what you think!
A brand new kind of computer and gadget repair service called Inbay, which aims to set a new standard for IT support across the UK has launched it’s flagship store in Kingsway, Central London.
The client brief was simple. Tim Burford, Design Director designLSM was required to create a high street presence where local residents and workers can casually drop in to have their computers and gadgets maintained and repaired. The retail shop needed to look welcoming for those with little or no IT experience and inside – warm, friendly and above all – not technically intimidating.
Bespoke curved counters were created to soften the professional environment. White walls were applied with fun graphics, illustrations and vibrant, orange alcoves made from painted glass. Dalsouple, rubber flooring was chosen for its resistance and flexibility.
Main features include the curved walls featuring flowing graphics and illustrations and a central white, curved consultancy bar.
