Tapas Revolution
designLSM have been busy creating a second Madrid-style all-day tapas bar for Chef and founder of Tapas Revolution - Omar Allibhoy. The new branch is located in Bluewater’s much anticipated Plaza and is set to match the huge success of the critically acclaimed Tapas Revolution in White City Westfield, which opened last year.
Commencing work on 20th October where Tim Burford, Project Director designLSM and his team created a modern 950sq ft counter operation and 730 sq ft back of house preparation area. The central kitchen is surrounded by a 29-metre polished, pewter bar top, with character oak frontage. Materials for the back counter include carrera marble and butcher-block oak with additional warmth provided by handmade red glazed tiles. To accommodate the slick counter dining, 38 individual high stools have been provided and red leather booths are available for families and groups.
Inspiration for the design came from visiting the bustling tapas bars of Madrid and Barcelona. An inner steel gantry is supported from the front and back counters where pendant lights, blackboard and oak menu boards, Ibericos hams and other authentic Spanish produce hang. There are fresh Churros served from the back counter with a street vender style display. Lively graphics on the booth table tops evoke a true feeling of Spain.
The main challenge arose from the fact that the unit is in the middle of a mall - so no fixed walls, ceiling or floor finishes to provide additional character and atmosphere. This was partially overcome by ensuring all the lighting, signage and menus were self supporting. The tables and back bar have been colourfully dressed to create an authentic feel. Commenting on the new launch, Allibhoy said: "Bluewater is a great location to open our next Tapas Revolution and I'm sure our visitors will experience what it's truly like to eat at an authentic tapas bar."
