Following the successful interior design delivery for Sumosan in Doha, DesignLSM were appointed to evolve the concept for a new site in Dubai situated within the EDITION Hotel.
Sumosan – a premium Japanese restaurant in Qatar – wanted to create a dining experience for both locals and visitors, developing the global design narrative which DesignLSM curated for the first site, providing a blueprint for future restaurants that the internationally-acclaimed brand were opening.
At the heart of the restaurant lies the open theatre kitchen, highlighting the cuisine and provoking the emotional engagement of all five senses; sight, smell, touch, sound, and taste.
Design inspiration
The design concept combines a showcase of the beauty of natural materials and forms, but with the intention of controlling and crafting them in a refined and stylised way to create an elegant and engaging space. A striking brass sculpture framing the bar is inspired by the organic form of Japanese flowers and petals, drawing back to the cultural provenance of the culinary concept, whilst delivering a distinctive feature piece that takes centre stage within the room.
Dark timber panels with a raw metal effect finish have been introduced as a prominent design DNA statement, inspired by Japanese screening, reflecting the level of precision and skill of Asian craftsmanship.
Design outcome
Throughout the space, striking design features create an immersive and vibrant dining experience - from a ceiling mural inspired by contemporary Japanese tattoos, a luxurious bespoke dining chair and green-hued banquettes, to the open kitchen pass presenting a glimmer of the culinary craft that is going on behind the scenes showcasing the masterful skill of making sushi.
Making a mark on Dubai’s dynamic restaurant scene, Sumosan has become one of the latest hotspots, graced by the presence of famous celebrity and high profile guests.
Sumosan Doha
Originally working on Sumosan Doha, the design was influenced by the art and precision taken when producing the famed Sumosan sushi, as well as the craft and materiality of Japanese joinery. The Sumosan narrative reflects a natural, sophisticated and contemporary style, with the open kitchen forming the heart of the space – ensuring that the mastery of the chefs and the exquisite Japanese cuisine are the true stars of the show.
Signature design elements introduced by DesignLSM add a subtle elegance to Sumosan’s latest venue, including an exclusive dining chair created for Sumosan, a custom designed table, and tailor made waiter stations.
DesignLSM also commissioned striking art installations to compliment the design, including a tubular, undulating sculpture occupying the ceiling and creating a dramatic impact for guests.
