Chop Bloc

  • Dual identity for a steak & grill restaurant and upstairs bar in Chelmsford

Chop Bloc is a successful 200+ cover restaurant in Chelmsford Essex. The restaurant is the first for brothers Dave and Steve Patten, who intend to expand with new restaurant locations on the horizon.

The Patten family have been involved with production of quality beef for a number of years, and Steve & Dave invested a great deal of time researching steak and burger concepts across America and Europe. Their product knowledge and passion has created a quality steak and burger restaurant.

We were appointed to create the brand identity for Chop Bloc as well as the interior design and architecture for the scheme. We were commissioned to create the name, logo, signage and all customer touch-points throughout.

Chop Bloc Identity

The logo for the restaurant combines bold distressed typography with a simple cow motif, which appears throughout the restaurant environment in various iterations. On the walls around the restaurant hang bespoke light boxes with simple typography and illustrations.

The restaurant menus are printed on uncoated kraft like paper, reminiscent of butcher’s parchment. The pages were folded into natural hide covers that were blind embossed with the logo.

As well as the brand application we also produced memorable billboard adverts that were on display at Chelmsford station before and after the restaurant opening.

Bloc Bar Identity

Chop Bloc is also home to the Bloc Bar, a smart late night cocktail bar that attracts big crowds throughout the week. For Bloc Bar we named and created an independent brand identity that sits harmoniously with the restaurant brand.

The typography and colour palette was kept paired back and simple, with bold and modern sans-serif typefaces at the forefront of the design.

Like the restaurant, the menu pages were folded into natural hide covers. We also designed an eye-catching box stack sign that housed illuminated 3D letters spelling out “Bloc Bar”.
